Position Beats Potential When the Room Is Moving Fast

Potential is buried value. Position is value placed where it can convert.

Potential is comforting because it lets people believe their time is coming. Position is different. Position determines whether the opportunity can even find you when the room starts moving.

The New Rules of Relevance explains why talented people get skipped while less gifted people advance. It is not always because the system is blind. Sometimes the system sees exactly what it has been trained to see: proximity, confidence, usefulness, class fluency, and strategic visibility. In other words, position.

A person with potential may be capable of doing the work. A positioned person is already located where the work, trust, and decision-making intersect. That difference matters. The positioned person gets remembered in conversations. They get invited earlier. They get interpreted more favorably. They become easier to choose because their signal is already inside the room.

This does not mean talent is irrelevant. It means talent needs architecture. Your skill must be placed where it can be recognized, tested, trusted, and converted. Otherwise, you are carrying gold underground and wondering why no one is buying it.

Positioning requires deliberate movement: building the right relationships, speaking the language of the room, documenting contribution, becoming useful to real problems, and making sure your value is not buried under humility, resentment, or invisibility.

The New Rules of Relevance gives overlooked people a necessary correction. Waiting to be noticed is not a strategy. Potential may explain what you can become, but position determines whether the world is forced to deal with it.
