Regret Is a Relationship Too

Regret should inform you, not own you.

Regret is usually treated like a private wound. In reality, it is a relationship.

Relationships: I Am Done Talking About Them does something useful by placing regret beside love, money, attention, emotions, success, and death. That placement matters. Regret is not just something we feel. It is something we revisit, negotiate with, argue against, excuse, romanticize, and sometimes obey.

A person with an unresolved relationship with regret may keep trying to repair the past through the present. They may choose partners who resemble old unfinished stories. They may sabotage new opportunities because missing an old one made them distrust timing. They may overcorrect so aggressively that wisdom turns into fear wearing a responsible outfit.

Regret becomes dangerous when it graduates from teacher to master.

There is nothing wrong with learning from what hurt. There is nothing wrong with admitting that a relationship, career decision, financial mistake, educational path, or family moment could have been handled differently. The problem starts when regret becomes identity. At that point, you no longer say, “I made a mistake.” You begin to live like, “I am the mistake.”

That is where the correction must happen.

Regret should inform you, not own you. It should sharpen discernment, not freeze movement. It should help you recognize patterns, not convince you that every new door is another setup for humiliation.

The healthier question is not “How do I erase what happened?” You cannot. The better question is, “What did this reveal, and what must I build differently now?”

That question turns regret into instruction.

When regret is processed correctly, it stops being a courtroom and becomes a classroom. You still remember what happened, but you stop letting the memory sentence your future.
