Relevance Is the New Currency

Being talented is not enough if the room cannot read your value.

Talent matters, but talent alone does not guarantee access. Credentials matter, but credentials alone do not guarantee movement. The New Rules of Relevance begins with a blunt economic reality: in many modern rooms, relevance is the currency that determines who gets seen, selected, protected, and advanced.

Relevance is not popularity. It is not clout. It is not noise. Relevance is the ability to be read as useful, positioned, and aligned with what the room currently values. That can feel unfair, especially for people who were taught that hard work would be enough. But the modern game is not built on effort alone. It is built on signal.

The book identifies power, position, class, and usefulness as the new currencies of movement. Each one affects whether your talent gets interpreted as valuable or ignored as background noise. You can be brilliant and still be unreadable. You can be capable and still be poorly positioned. You can be present and still be irrelevant to the decision-makers in the room.

That is the uncomfortable correction. The goal is not to become fake. The goal is to become legible to opportunity without surrendering your substance. If no one understands what you solve, where you fit, or why your presence matters, your gift remains underleveraged.

The New Rules of Relevance does not coddle the overlooked. It gives them a sharper map. Invisibility is not always permanent, but relevance must be built, signaled, and maintained with intention.

The question is no longer, “Am I talented?” The better question is, “Am I positioned where my talent can convert?”
